Nathan: What was the biggest adjustment you had to make coming to Emory from the Midwest?
Adam: I think it took some getting used to, and not necessarily in a bad way, to be from a geographic minority. Emory is only something like 6% from the Midwest so it was weird but also cool to be from somewhere that not that many others were from,
N: Yeah I feel the same way, I thought the people at Emory would be from a much large variety of places when I came here so it was definitely a surprise when the majority of my floor is from New York or LA?
A: Yeah there is definitely a New York/California majority I didn't know about
N: You mentioned being a geographical minority here at Emory. Was there a particular point when you first felt like being an outsider or any moment/experience stand out?
A: I did have a little bit of an "aha" moment when I got really excited to see on someone's door that they were also from Ohio and realized how strange it was that there were only two of us in a dorm of over one hundred, even though Ohio is one of the most populous states in the country
N: Yeah I only know one other person from Michigan in the freshman class, so when I was a Michigan license plate I got really excited
A: Yeah I get excited about Ohio license plates too
N: For me I have definitely felt more Midwest pride since coming to Emory. Before I wasn't as proud to say I'm from the Midwest as I am after over a semester at Emory. Have you felt the same thing?
A: I have felt the same thing about being prouder to be from the Midwest and I think it has to do with my first point about being a minority. When you're a minority you develop a stronger sense of who you really are/ where you really came from. I think that more distinct awareness has definitely led me to be more proud of my roots.
N: What part do you miss most about the Midwest?
A: To be honest I miss the weather! It was tough getting used to the weather being really really hot through October. I like that in the midwest it starts feeling like fall right as school starting
N: What part do you miss least about the Midwest?
A: I hate to stick to weather but I would say I miss their weather fortitude least. It's nice to know down here that if it snows we're definitely getting school off. Back home it had to really get bad for us to have any hope of a snow day.
