Soon after realizing how few Midwesterners there really are, Meg and I decided that we should form our own little Midwest club. It would be an informal safe-space for us to talk about when we feel out of place sometimes as well as to vent about people from Long Island. Anyone is welcome as long as they are from the Midwest and we always meet at Dave’s Cosmic Subs in the village, which was founded in Ohio.
We call ourselves the Midwest Society. Meetings usually start out as pretty causal conversations with various stories about things that seem so foreign to us coming from the Midwest but are normal for many of the people who attend Emory. As the meetings go on we talk more seriously about how the culture is different here at Emory and how it had definitely taken time to get used to. The meetings let us go “home” for about an hour before we walk back from Middle America back to our everyday lives.
